The Cricket Match
The beautiful mansion that stands in the heart of these grounds, in Essex England, is known as Audley End House. Over the centuries it has endured many changes of ownership. In the 12th century it was a Benedictine abbey. In the 17th century, it was rebuilt in a palace form and bought by Charles II to use as a base for attending Newmarket races. During the 20th century the house was used by the government during World War II and was later sold to the Ministry of Works in 1948. Its subsequent owners are English Heritage.
